Cards Place (1900)

History

Completed in 1900, Cards Place was designed as high street cottages to replace its predecessor, a block of unsavoury dwellings called ’Hardings’.  This changed quite soon with shops all along the ground floor, and ’The Forge’ just round the corner in Pitt Lane. To the rear of these was Townfield that has become the recreation ground.

Before the second world war, ‘The Jersey Dairy’,  run by Mr and Mrs Heathfield, here having their picture taken at their door to No.1, Townfield Cottages, at what is now the Greengrocer with the original stained glass windows.
